Starting from May 2025, Spain and other Schengen Area countries will require travellers from visa-exempt countries to obtain authorization through the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). This includes visitors from over 60 countries that currently do not need a visa to enter Europe. Cyprus will require an ETIAS even though it is not part of the Schengen Area.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization designed to enhance security and facilitate smoother entry processes for travellers. The system will pre-screen travellers before they arrive at the border, aiming to identify potential security, irregular migration, or epidemic risks. The authorization will be valid for up to three years or until the traveller’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
Why Travelers Need ETIAS
International Travelers: Visitors from over 60 visa-exempt countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, and Japan, will need an ETIAS to enter the Schengen Area. This new requirement aims to streamline entry procedures and improve security.
UK Travelers: With the full impact of Brexit still unfolding, British travellers will also need an ETIAS for visits to Spain and other Schengen Area countries. Before Brexit, UK citizens enjoyed visa-free travel across the EU. However, post-Brexit, the UK is no longer part of the EU, and its citizens are now subject to the same entry requirements as other non-EU countries. Consequently, an ETIAS authorization will be mandatory for short-term visits to Spain and other Schengen countries for tourism, business, or transit purposes from May 2025.
Application Process
The ETIAS application process is straightforward and can be completed online. Here’s what you need to do:
Provide Personal Information: Fill in your personal details, passport information, and answer security-related questions.
Pay the Application Fee: A fee of €7 is required.
Approval Time: Most applications are approved within minutes, but it is recommended to apply well in advance to avoid any delays.
Validity and Duration of Stay
Once approved, the ETIAS authorization is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area.
Exemptions and Special Cases
UK nationals who are beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement are exempt from ETIAS. They can reside in their EU host country and travel to other European countries requiring ETIAS, provided they hold documents proving their status.
Preparing for Your Trip to Spain
To ensure a smooth travel experience, follow these steps:
Check Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date.
Apply Early: Submit your ETIAS application well ahead of your departure date.
Stay Informed: Keep up to date with any changes or updates regarding ETIAS requirements and travel regulations.
Final Thoughts
While the introduction of ETIAS adds an extra step in the travel planning process, it is designed to improve security and streamline border control within the Schengen Area. By understanding these new requirements and preparing accordingly, travellers from the UK and other visa-exempt countries can continue to enjoy seamless trips to Spain and other European destinations.
